Intermediate School 6th Grade

Welcome to Mrs. McNamara's and Mrs. Kevern's 6th grade Website!

On this website you will be able to experience our science classes and see what your students are doing.

Science Day!

What an extraordinary day for us!  Thank you to Mrs. Currey for all of the organizing of the parent volunteers and the coordination of the activities.  We LOVED every minute of it!

Chemistry!

Students were given several project choices to demonstrate their understanding of elements and the periodic table. Ali and Bennett take you on a "gallery walk" to see the variety of projects submitted.

Retreat 2011!
We are back from retreat and would like to share some thoughts, reactions, and knowledge about our magnificent, magical experience: Hikes, COLD, campfires, F.R.O.G. time, Me time, We climbed inside a tree!, ate moonrocks, sang songs, created an eco-friendly Nightclub 29 on a boat,a Cali-eco hotel on a beach,  a hotel/golf coursean ice cream shop with an eco-bird, and underwater mall, a Chipotle!!, We had a Scavenger Hunt!, a Seton walk,  we found a DEAD DEER!, Jake invented an eco-friendly toilet. We had a bunch of different kind of food like lasagna, WINGS!, pizza, coffeecake, banana cake, ice cream sandwiches,  and measured solid and liquid food waste.    It was a lot of fun and we had an awesome slideshow at the end.

All the rivers run. Dancing in the sun. Cradled in their watersheds.  All the rivers run.

The 6th grade had an awesome time at the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Everyone completed the requirements to become Junior Rangers of the National Park.

November 2010
COLLABORATION!  Using GoogleDocs, scientists in Mrs. McNamara's and Mrs. Kevern's class were able to collaborate on the "A CELL IS LIKE.." project. Scientists from Mrs. McNamara's class were paired with scientists from Mrs. Kevern's class, and without meeting face to face, brainstormed and completed a document comparing a cell and its organelles to a known location.  Then the groups met face to face to finish the project.

ZOO!

Picture
Our visit to the zoo was awesome!  We were able to see the research animals in their zoo habitat and make observations about the animal behavior, their interactions with other animals (and sometimes with us!) and evaluate the zoo habitat. Some students were able to go "behind the scenes" to see the baby rhino and talk with the research veterinarian on staff. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who made the trip possible!

Netbook Pilot Project

Picture
The netbooks have arrived in Mrs. Kevern's and Mrs. McNamara's classes. Each student has been issued a netbook for classroom use. Students are using them to create safety posters or brochures to demonstrate their understanding of safe lab procedures and use of equipment.  The students have proven to be VERY savvy netbook users, learning from each other and taking great pride in the use and care of their netbook.

Working Hard

The students are thrilled to be working with the netbooks.  In science we are focusing on safety using interactive web sites and in social studies we are sharpening up on our map skills.
